BEGINNINGS
Germantown Films, based in Louisville, Kentucky, is a film company for the production of unique, independent films of various genres. The dream of creating independent film began in 1984 and, as the name might imply, we started shooting a variety of films—in 16mm at the time—centered around the Germantown and Schnitzelburg neighborhoods in Louisville. We released our first film, The Legend of the Pope Lick Monster, in 1988. Subsequent films followed that sought out stories that were also indigenous to our city and our region.
Many of our films are available to watch for free on YouTube and Tubi.
GOING FORWARD
While we remain actively engaged in creating content that is unique to the history and culture of Louisville and Kentucky, we also are dedicated to stories that seek to explore the breadth and fragility of the human experience, no matter the region. There are so many stories need to be told and voices to be heard—now more than ever.
ON COLLABORATION
Collaboration is at very heart of filmmaking. What successes we have had truly was dependent on the hard work and talents of so many people who have joined us in our efforts and with whom we would not hesitate for a second to work with again.
We also very much look forward to meeting new potential collaborators. The projects listed on this site are current projects open for interested parties to get involved with, but specific talent we are currently seeking is listed where needed. Even if you don't see something that pertains specifically to you, please reach out to us and let us know of your interest. We love hearing from people working from both sides of the camera.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The power of the moving image can be indelible; the moving image can cause people to be inspired, to be called to action, to be reflective and meditative, to understand. The cumulative effect of filmic components—the mise en scene of a frame, a visual effect that adds depth to a scene, the exact timing of an edit, a memorable musical phrase, poignant lines of dialogue, a twist of the plot, the satisfying resolution of a story—all work together like the parts of a well-oiled locomotive barreling down the track toward its destination of bringing the viewers together on a journey of understanding, enlightenment and discovery.
With gratitude,
Ron Schildknecht
